UCLA appears here for one laboratory: RoMeLa, the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory run by Dennis Hong in the Samueli School of Engineering. Hong started the lab at Virginia Tech and moved it to UCLA in 2014. It is an academic group funded by grants and sponsors such as the Office of Naval Research, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Robotis, not a company.
Its humanoid line runs from the small DARwIn robots through CHARLI, whose CHARLI-2 made Time's best inventions list and won the Louis Vuitton best humanoid award at RoboCup 2011, to THOR-RD, which entered the DARPA Robotics Challenge finals and won RoboCup in 2015. BRUCE, an open-platform biped with proprioceptive actuators built with the spin-off Westwood Robotics, arrived in 2022. ARTEMIS, unveiled on 10 March 2023, is a 142 cm, 38 kg biped with custom force-controlled electric actuators that the lab says walks at 2.1 m/s; its build was partly crowdfunded with 118,000 US dollars from 232 donors. It placed third at RoboCup 2023 and won every match at RoboCup 2024 in Eindhoven, the lab's sixth title.
In 2025 the lab built COSMO, a robot used to promote a Netflix film. None of these machines is for sale.
